This painting is about my Grandmother, Iris Clayton. She was stolen as a child and taken to Cootamundra girls home and trained as a domestic servant. She could leave when she was 18. My Grandmother had 6 children and then moved to Canberra. She worked at AIAS and later became a member; she was a member for the cultural council and helped establish the ACT Aboriginal health service. I remember her being very witty, strong, and passionate about sharing her culture and educating other around her. This painting is for all the girls in Cootamundra Home. This is for all the girls that bloomed into strong black women like my Nan.
